Toward an IPv6 world in mobile networks – mechanisms for IPv4 to IPv6 transition

ثبت نشده
چکیده

connected hosts reduce this effectiveness, as do many web applications that demand multiple ports. NAT also introduces further complications (Box B). Nevertheless, many mobile networks employ NAT today, and more will do so in the future. While NAT was devised as a shortterm solution, the IETF defined the next version of IP, IPv6, as the long-term solution for the address shortage. IPv6 has numerous improvements over IPv4, but one key feature is the fact that the new address space is orders of magnitude larger. Now facing an enormous increase in the number of connected devices, mobile networks are among the first that need the IPv6 address space.

Global Mobile IPv6 Addressing Using Transition Mechanisms

The adoption of the Internet Protocol in mobile and wireless technologies has considerably increased the number of hosts that can potentially access the global Internet. IPv6 is considered the long term solution for the IPv4 address shortage problem, but the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is supposed to be very gradual. Therefore, there will be a long time during which both protocol versions will...

IPv4/IPv6 Transition Mechanisms

Currently, the Internet consists of native IPv4 (IPv4-only), native IPv6, and IPv4/IPv6 dual networks. Unfortunately, IPv4 and IPv6 are incompatible protocols. When both IP versions are available and the users of Internet want to connect without any restrictions, a transition mechanism is required. During the time of migration from IPv4 to IPv6 networks, a number of transition mechanisms have b...

An Incremental Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN) for IPv6 Transition

Global IPv6 deployment was slower than originally expected. As IPv4 address exhaustion approaches, IPv4 to IPv6 transition issues become more critical and less tractable. Host-based transition mechanisms used in dual-stack environments cannot meet all transition requirements. Most end users are not sufficiently expert to configure or maintain host-based transition mechanisms. CarrierGrade NAT (...

Toward Ipv4 to Ipv6 Migration within a Campus Network

The evolution of the Internet has effectively exhausted all unique addresses offered by the current IPv4 protocol. Hence, IPv6 has been developed in response to the predicted long-term demand for addresses by Internet users. This new IP version has a 128-bit address length, which is four times that of IPv4. As the two protocols have different formats and behaviors, efforts are needed to ensure ...
